This trip, scheduled for 24th - 29th January 2025, has an itinerary designed to photograph the many White-tailed Eagles that spend the winter in this vast area.
Throughout this trip, the locations should provide opportunities to capture images of Common Buzzard, Imperial Eagle, White-tailed Sea Eagle & more.
Hortobágy National Park in Hungary is renowned for its picturesque scenery and rich wildlife. It is also home to the wintering eagles, majestic birds often seen soaring against the beautiful Hungarian landscape. These eagles visit Hortobágy from early autumn to late winter each year, playing a crucial role in the park's ecology.
The White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) is Europe’s largest bird of prey with a wingspan of 180 to 245 cm and a weight of 3 to 7 kg. It has powerful talons, a strong curved bill for catching fish, and exceptional eyesight, spotting prey from over a kilometer away.
During winter, White-tailed Eagles gather along the Tisza River in Hortobágy National Park, feeding on fish, small mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. They also scavenge carrion left by other predators. These eagles typically hunt alone or in pairs, using their large wingspan to soar above the water in search of food.
